The 800,000-ton Coal to Olefin Project in Xinjiang Put into Construction

2025-8-29

On August 26, 2025, Xinjiang Shanneng Chemical held the kickoff meeting for the general contracting of the methanol to olefin unit of the 800,000 ton coal to olefin project in Wucaiwan, Zhundong, marking the official entry of the methanol to olefin unit into the substantive construction stage.

At the kick-off meeting, the technical team conducted a special demonstration on the design basis, key equipment configuration and energy consumption indicators of the methanol to olefin plant. The project design team reports on the engineering progress control mechanism and implementation plan.

The 800,000 ton coal to olefin project is located in the Zhundong Economic and Technological Development Zone of Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. With coal as raw material, it adopts processes such as coal pressure gasification, purification, methanol synthesis, and methanol to olefin and implants green hydrogen coupling to produce olefins.

The project is totally invested at 20.858 billion yuan, of which the environmental protection investment is 1.667 billion yuan, accounting for 8.0% of the project construction investment.

The project construction includes the main engineering, storage and transportation engineering, public engineering, environmental protection engineering and supporting engineering.

The main project includes 13 sets of production facilities, including air separation, gasification, transformation and heat recovery, low-temperature methanol washing, sulfur recovery, methanol synthesis, methanol to olefin, olefin separation, steam cracking, C4 to 1-butene, polyethylene, polypropylene, and electrolyzed water units. Public auxiliary engineering includes power stations, water supply and drainage systems and torch systems. Storage and transportation engineering includes coal transportation and storage systems, tank areas and product warehouses. Environmental protection engineering mainly includes waste gas treatment facilities, wastewater treatment facilities, and solid waste treatment facilities.
