Peru: Identifies Over 20 GW of Untapped Wind Energy Potential, with Huge Potential in the Northern Region
2026-4-15
Peru¡¯s Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) recently released a report stating that the country boasts enormous wind energy potential, with a total capacity of 20,493 megawatts (MW). This discovery establishes Peru as a key market for renewable energy development.
Jos¨¦ Meza, head of the General Directorate of Energy Efficiency (DGEE) under MINEM, emphasized that Peru¡¯s wind energy potential is mainly concentrated in the northern and southern coastal areas, which offer optimal wind conditions for large scale power generation.
Despite the vast resource potential, Meza noted that Peru¡¯s current installed wind power capacity stands at only 1.01 gigawatts (GW), accounting for merely 5.0% of the total potential. This significant gap highlights huge opportunities to drive sustainable investment in the sector.
To date, multiple projects have obtained pre feasibility study permits approved by the Economic Operations Committee of the National Interconnected System (COES). Once implemented, these projects are expected to add up to 8.2 GW of power to the national grid.
MINEM reaffirmed its commitment to developing regional wind energy resources by promoting investment, thereby advancing the diversification of the energy mix and the country¡¯s sustainable development.
